I could be wrong but isn't this the brief time right after the Civil War when industry really took off? Isn't this the time of the "Robber Barons"?

I've always loved history but never had time to study it a lot other than what was required. After my time as a soldier, I've always been a scientist / engineer / turbonerd. When I was working on my education, learning something that would get me a job making good money was my main concern.

I love history and literature but never saw where anyone could make a decent living at it unless you got lucky and became a famous author.

Please allow me to go a little off topic here and say that I'm proud to announce the birth of my 6th grandchild. Check out my blog for pictures.

I'm also sad to say I lost one of my best four-legged friends. If you have a moment, please talk to what ever higher power you believe in and ask them to treat his soul kindly.

Joe,

I'm certain your friend is being well cared for, as he deserves.

The Gilded Age is around the time period when the robber barons were in their heyday. Perhaps slightly afterward, because there were a lot of reforms that resulted from the populace's disgust with politics and big business.

Congratulations on your grandchild. I hope I live long enough to hold a few of my own.

All I could think of was Vanderbilt and his ilk...

Interesting reading. I find that I read just selective parts of history. That's as dangerous as only remembering selective parts of it.
